Chronic allergies are allergies that cause year-round symptoms. Chronic allergies are most commonly caused by indoor allergens. Indoor allergens include dust mites, cockroaches, pet hair or dander and mold.
An allergic reaction occurs when cells in the immune system interpret a foreign substance or allergen as harmful. The immune system overreacts to these allergens and produces histamine, which is a chemical that causes allergy symptoms, such as inflammation, sneezing, and coughing.
An allergy is a hypersensitive reaction of the body when it comes into contact with a substance that is in fact harmless. Allergy symptoms are the result of an inappropriate activation of the body’s natural defence mechanisms. Your body is designed to react against foreign substances, such as viruses and bacteria. Inflammation and excess fluid secretion create an easy entry for immune cells, dilute the concentration of outside invaders and wash away toxins. If the immune system has become hypersensitive, however, it can overreact to allergens with results that are often worse than the simple effects the allergen might have had. The hypersensitive response comes from the natural immune system and ranges from a slightly uncomfortable feeling to a fatal anaphylaxis.
The allergies are broadly classified as Food allergy, seasonal allergy, pet allergy, Drug allergy Allergic rhinitis or hay fever, Allergic conjunctivitis, urticaria, Allergies to poison, Allergies to insect or bee sting, Pollen allergies, Sun reactions to the skin, Cosmetic allergy, Dust allergy, Chemical allergy.
According to Ayurveda the allergy is basically dependent on the allergen. The allergic substance or the allergen can vitiate a particular dosha or combination of dosha. so the allergic symptoms are purely dependent on what dosha is getting vitiated due to the allergen. Allergen is just a trigger. A person who is already having imbalance in Doshas are more susceptible to various allergic forms.
Ayurvedic allergy treatment focuses on pacifying the imbalanced dosha, restoring digestion with herbal preparations, and advising supporting diet and lifestyle changes. Stability in health along with strengthening immunity (Vyadhikshmatva) is a long-term process. Hence, long term treatment is needed.
